Kim André Arnesen (b. 1980) is one of the most frequently performed classical composers today. Kim is an elected member of the Norwegian Composers Society, and a full-time composer focusing on choral music. In September 2017 he signed with Boosey & Hawkes as one of their house composers.
Premiered by the National Lutheran Choir in October 2017, the Holy Spirit Mass was commissioned to honor the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and 50 years of Lutheran-Catholic dialogue. The New York Times reported “the Mass seemed extremely well made and was rapturously received,” and Arnesen “seems to have succeeded admirably” in writing a work that is edifying for performers and listeners alike.
The Choir performance begins approximately 58 minutes from the start of recording.
This new commission is dedicated to Pope Francis and will be premiered on October 31, 2018 at the Vatican Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. The text was developed by Together In Hope Project founder Gary Aamodt in collaboration with members of the Monastero di Bose ecumenical community in Italy and Susan Palo Cherwien, noted writer, hymn writer, and musician based in Minnesota.
